Quick answer

What size should Etsy listing photos be?

Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2,000 pixels wide and 2,000 pixels tall. The first photo should be at least 635 pixels, or the listing may show lower in search, and should be landscape or square. Use JPG, PNG, GIF, SVG, or HEIC without transparency, in sRGB, and keep files light: over 1 MB may stall.

Search "Etsy listing photo size" and you'll get the same numbers on page after page: 4:3, 3000 × 2250, under 1 MB, up to 10 photos, 72 PPI. Some of those come from Etsy. Several don't, and one is simply out of date.

So I went back to Etsy's own help center and policy pages, wrote down what Etsy actually says, and marked everything else as convention. Then I ran a small file-size test on real product photos, because "under 1 MB" is the rule sellers ask about most and nobody shows what it costs in quality.

One disclosure: I'm the founder of EnhanceCraft, an AI image toolkit, and I mention our tools where they help. Everything in this guide works in any editor.

What Size Should Etsy Listing Photos Be?

Etsy recommends listing photos that are at least 2,000 pixels wide and 2,000 pixels tall. Your first photo should be at least 635 pixels on both sides, or the listing may show up lower in search. That's the whole official size rule, from Etsy's image requirements page.

The 2,000 px figure is a recommendation, not a block. If you upload something smaller, Etsy shows a "Listings look best with photos at least 2000 pixels wide" warning, but its listing help page says you can still publish. The reason to clear it anyway is zoom: buyers enlarge your photo on the listing page, and a small file falls apart there first.

Here's what Etsy publishes, next to the popular advice that Etsy doesn't:

SpecWhat Etsy saysCommon advice Etsy doesn't publish
SizeAt least 2,000 px wide and tall (recommended)"3000 × 2250 is ideal"
Search floorFirst photo at least 635 px, or it may rank lower—
ShapeFirst photo landscape or square; it sets the shape of the rest"Use 4:3"
File sizeFiles over 1 MB "may not finish uploading" on slow connections"Must be under 1 MB"
File typesJPG, GIF, PNG, SVG, HEIC; no animated GIF, no transparencyLists that leave out HEIC and SVG
ColorEtsy converts to sRGB, so convert first to keep colors accurate—
ResolutionNothing about PPI"Must be 72 PPI"
Photos per listingUp to 20 photos and 2 videos (5–15 seconds)"Up to 10 photos"

The convention column isn't all wrong. 4:3 and 3000 × 2250 are sensible choices, and staying under 1 MB avoids upload trouble. They're just not Etsy rules, and treating them as rules causes problems, like squashing a photo to hit an exact pixel size.

What Aspect Ratio Does Etsy Use for Listing Photos?

Etsy doesn't require an aspect ratio. It asks for one thing: the first photo should be horizontal (landscape) or square, so the center of the image survives the cropped thumbnails. The first photo also sets the shape of the photos after it, so Etsy suggests keeping all of a listing's photos the same shape.

4:3 became the standard answer because it's landscape, it's the native shape of most phone cameras, and it crops to a square without losing much. That makes it a good default. So is a 3:2 camera photo, and so is a square.

There is one wrinkle. Etsy's own thumbnail advice says "avoid square crops" and recommends horizontal photos, while the same page allows a square first photo. Read together, the safe choice is landscape for the first photo, with the product well inside the frame. Square is allowed, but it gives Etsy less to work with in landscape placements.

Etsy Thumbnail Size: How Your First Photo Gets Cropped

Etsy doesn't publish a single thumbnail size, because there isn't one. Etsy says your photo is cropped into square, portrait, and landscape thumbnails in different places on the site. The seller tool for this is the listing thumbnail adjustment, where you can preview and position each crop. The 570 × 456 figure you'll see quoted around the web isn't in Etsy's current documentation, so I wouldn't design around it.

What you can plan around is how much of your photo each crop keeps. Etsy doesn't publish its exact portrait ratio, so the table below uses 4:5 and 3:4 as typical examples. These are center crops, worked out from the ratios:

Your photo's shapeSquare crop keeps4:5 portrait crop keeps3:4 portrait crop keeps4:3 landscape crop keeps
4:3 landscape75% of the width60% of the width56% of the widthAll of it
3:2 landscape (most cameras)67% of the width53% of the width50% of the width89% of the width
1:1 squareAll of it80% of the width75% of the width75% of the height

The practical rule: in a landscape photo, keep the product inside the middle half of the frame with clear space on both sides. Then every crop Etsy makes still shows the whole item. That's exactly what Etsy means when it tells you to shoot "further back than you think you'll need."

If your product already fills the frame edge to edge, cropping is lossy no matter what. Retake it wider, or add canvas around a cut-out version of the product. Our smart crop guide covers re-framing around a subject.

How Big Can an Etsy Photo File Be?

Etsy doesn't set a hard file-size cap for listing photos. It warns that files larger than 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on a slow connection, and its listing troubleshooting page goes further and says files over 300 KB can time out. So 1 MB is an upload-reliability guideline, not a published limit: Etsy's help pages don't name a size at which a photo is rejected, only that bigger files are more likely to stall.

I wanted to know what staying under 1 MB costs, so I measured it. I took six real product photos from our demo library: a wooden stool on a plain backdrop, a clothing flat-lay on a wood floor, a leather clutch on a table, an armchair in a room, a black leather jacket, and a framed print on a shelf. I center-cropped each to the target shape, scaled it down (never up), and saved it as a JPEG with Pillow, the same encoder our own tools use.

Photo2000 × 2000, quality 852000 × 2000, quality 952000 × 1500, quality 852000 × 1500, quality 95

Black leather jacket748 KB1,407 KB609 KB1,136 KB
Framed print on shelf662 KB1,425 KB452 KB1,024 KB

What the numbers say:

  • ●At quality 85, every photo stayed under 1 MB at both 2,000 px sizes, even the busy flat-lay.
  • ●At quality 95, five of six went over 1 MB at 2000 × 2000.
  • ●Texture costs bytes, not pixels. The stool on a plain backdrop was a quarter the size of the flat-lay at the same dimensions. Wood grain, fabric, and busy backgrounds are what push files up.
  • ●3000 × 2250 under 1 MB is hard. Only the framed print was large enough to test at that size without upscaling. It came in at 972 KB at quality 80 and 1,205 KB at quality 85.

So if you want both the 2,000 px target and a light file, export at quality 80 to 85. You won't see the difference at listing size, and Etsy compresses photos again for display anyway. Its help page says images may look a little less sharp after upload for that reason.

Is PNG or JPEG Better for Etsy?

For most listing photos, JPEG is the better choice: smaller files for the same visual quality, which matters given the upload guidance above. PNG is fine for graphics, digital products, and text-heavy images, but a photo saved as PNG is usually much larger than the same photo as a JPEG.

Two format traps catch sellers:

  • ●Transparency turns black. Etsy doesn't support transparent PNGs, and transparent areas show up black. If you've cut a product out, flatten it onto a solid background before uploading. Our Shopify and Etsy playbook explains why the same cut-out works on Shopify and fails on Etsy.
  • ●WebP isn't supported. Etsy's supported list is JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG, and HEIC. If your editor exports WebP by default, change it to JPG. Our image format guide covers when WebP is the right choice elsewhere.

HEIC, the iPhone's default photo format, is accepted, so you can upload straight from a phone. If you edit first, check what your editor accepts. EnhanceCraft, for example, takes JPG, PNG, and WebP, so set the iPhone camera to "Most Compatible" (it then shoots JPEG) or export as JPG first.

How to Check Your Photo's Size and Fix One That's Too Small

On a computer, open the file's properties or info panel to see its dimensions in pixels. On a phone, swipe up on the photo or tap the info button. You want both numbers at 2,000 or more. Ignore PPI or DPI: it's a print setting, and a 2000 × 2000 photo at 72 PPI and at 300 PPI looks identical on a screen. Our print DPI guide explains where that number does matter.

Then do the pixel budget before you crop. A 12-megapixel phone photo is 4032 × 3024 pixels, so you can trim up to about a third of its height and still clear 2,000 px. Supplier photos are where sellers come up short. Two of the photos in our own demo library are 2400 × 1600. They look sharp, and they still miss Etsy's recommendation by 400 px on the short side, before any cropping.

If a photo is too small, you have three options:

  1. 1.Reshoot or ask for the original. Suppliers often send a web-sized copy and have a larger file. It's always worth asking.
  2. 2.Enlarge it with ordinary resizing. This works for small gaps, but Etsy warns that increasing an image's size "may lose resolution" and pixelate it. Ordinary resizing stretches the existing pixels; it can't add detail.
  3. 3.Use AI upscaling. An AI upscaler reconstructs edges and texture as it enlarges, so a 1,600 px photo can reach 3,200 px with sharper detail than plain resizing gives. Check fine print and logos at full size afterwards, since tiny text is where any upscaler is most likely to guess.

EnhanceCraft's image upscaler does 2x and 4x on the free plan. One limit to know before you start: free downloads are capped at 1,200 px on the long edge, which is below Etsy's 2,000 px recommendation. You can judge the result on the free plan, but you need a paid plan or a pay-as-you-go credit pack to download a full-resolution file for Etsy.

For a whole listing set, the product photo editor has an Etsy preset: it upscales 4x, cleans up noise, crops square with a wide margin for Etsy's re-crops, and flattens the product onto white as a JPEG, for 5 credits a photo. It saves at quality 95 to keep detail, so by the test above its files can land over 1 MB. If Etsy's uploader stalls, run them through the free image compressor first. If you'd rather follow Etsy's landscape advice than use the preset's square crop, smart crop can frame a product at 4:3 instead.

How Many Photos Can an Etsy Listing Have?

An Etsy listing can have up to 20 photos and 2 videos, and each video runs 5 to 15 seconds. Many guides still say 10 photos, which is out of date.

You don't need all 20. A strong set covers the hero shot, the item in use or in context, a scale shot next to something familiar, close-up details, and any variations. A scale shot is the one most often missing, and it heads off a lot of "smaller than I expected" messages. Our product photo fixes guide covers what makes each of those shots work.

How to Take Pictures for Etsy Listings That Survive Every Crop

Shoot in landscape, step back further than feels natural, and center the product with empty space on every side. Every Etsy-specific photo problem in this guide, from thumbnail crops to the 2,000 px target, is easier to solve with a wider original than with editing afterwards.

A few habits make the rest easy:

  • ●Keep one shape for the whole listing. The first photo sets it, and mixed shapes look improvised in the gallery.
  • ●Use the same background across your shop. A consistent look in search results reads as a real brand. If you need clean backgrounds, our Etsy background removal page shows a before and after on a handmade product photo.
  • ●Check the thumbnail preview before you publish. The adjustment tool shows each crop, and it takes ten seconds.

Does Etsy Allow AI-Edited Product Photos?

Etsy requires listing photos to be your own photos of the actual item. Its listing image rules call for "original photos of the actual product buyers will receive," not renderings or stock photos. There are two narrow exceptions: computer-generated mockups in the extra photos of personalized items, and stock mockups for designs printed by a production partner.

Etsy's Creativity Standards do allow items that are created with AI, as long as you say so in the listing description. Neither page addresses editing your own photo with AI specifically.

The line that follows from the rules is accuracy. Cleaning up the background, fixing exposure, removing noise, or upscaling still leaves you with your photo of your item. Generating a product shot, or changing the item's color, shape, or condition, doesn't. If a buyer would be surprised by what arrives, the edit went too far.

Your Etsy Photo Checklist

Before you publish, check that:

  1. 1.Every photo is at least 2,000 px on both sides, and the first is at least 635 px.
  2. 2.The first photo is landscape or square, and the rest match its shape.
  3. 3.The product sits in the middle half of the frame, with space on every side.
  4. 4.Files are JPG (or PNG for graphics), with no transparency and no WebP.
  5. 5.Colors are sRGB.
  6. 6.Files are around 1 MB or less; export at quality 80–85 if uploads stall.
  7. 7.You've previewed the thumbnail crops in the listing editor.
  8. 8.Every edit keeps the photo an accurate picture of what ships.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size is an Etsy product image? Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2,000 pixels wide and 2,000 pixels tall. The first photo should be at least 635 pixels on both sides, or the listing may show lower in search. Etsy doesn't require an exact size or ratio, so 3000 × 2250 and 2000 × 2000 are both fine.

What is the minimum photo size on Etsy? The first listing photo should be at least 635 × 635 pixels to avoid ranking lower in search. Photos under 2,000 px trigger a warning, but Etsy still lets you publish them. For sharp zoom, aim for 2,000 px or more on both sides.

Can my first Etsy photo be portrait? Etsy says the first photo should be landscape or square, so the center of the image survives the cropped thumbnails. Portrait photos are fine after the first one, but the first photo sets the shape of the others, so keeping the whole listing in one shape looks more consistent.

Is PNG or JPEG better for Etsy? JPEG is usually better for photos, because the files are smaller at the same visual quality. PNG suits graphics and digital products. Avoid transparent PNGs, which show black backgrounds on Etsy, and don't upload WebP, which Etsy doesn't support.

How many photos can an Etsy listing have? Up to 20 photos and 2 videos, with each video running 5 to 15 seconds. Guides that say 10 photos are out of date.

Can I use AI to edit my Etsy listing photos? Etsy requires original photos of the actual item, and its rules don't address AI editing specifically. Edits that keep the photo accurate, like background cleanup, lighting, and upscaling, keep it your photo. Generating a product image breaks Etsy's original-photo rule, and changing how the item looks misrepresents what the buyer receives.

Get Your Photos to 2,000 Pixels

Most Etsy photo problems come down to one missing number: photos taken too tight, or files too small, to survive Etsy's crops and zoom. Shoot wider, check the pixel budget before you crop, and export at quality 80–85.

If your photos are short of 2,000 px, try the free image upscaler, with 25 credits to start, then 10 every month, no card required. The wider e-commerce workflow and our AI image toolkit cover the rest of a listing.
